Chapter 7 - THE COMPLAINT THAT ARRIVED AT OUR DOORThree days later, a county child-services worker knocked on our door.

Her name was Melissa Grant.

She was polite.

Professional.

And holding a report alleging we were neglecting Henry emotionally because “all household attention was focused on the ill younger child.”

My stomach dropped.

The anonymous caller alleged Henry was being encouraged to “display himself in gender-inappropriate ways,” that David had anger problems, and that Rose’s cancer had created an unstable home environment.

Anonymous.

We both knew.

Melissa could not confirm who made the call.

She did not need to.

The phrases were Patricia’s.

Gender-inappropriate.

Too much attention on Rose.

Unstable because of illness.

Patricia had used versions of all three before.

I was furious.

David became calm again.

That frightened me more.

We let Melissa inspect the home.

She spoke privately with Henry.

She reviewed Rose’s medical care.

She saw the school report and pediatrician’s documentation.

Then we told her about Patricia.

Everything.

The unauthorized pickup.

The forged form.

The forced haircut.

The Sunday dinner.

Melissa closed her notebook.

“I’m glad you told me.”

The investigation did not disappear instantly. That isn’t how it works.

But within two weeks, the allegation against us was found unsupported.

The more important consequence was that Melissa documented the possibility that Patricia was using child-welfare reporting as retaliation during an active family dispute.

Patricia called that afternoon.

David answered on speaker.

“How could you tell those people I made the report?”

“I didn’t.”

“You clearly did.”

“You just confirmed it.”

Silence.

I looked at David.

He looked at me.

Patricia had walked straight into it.

Then she said:

“I was worried about my grandchildren.”

David’s voice became very quiet.

“If you were worried about Henry, you wouldn’t have held his head while he begged you to stop.”

She hung up.

That call was saved too.
