Chapter 10 - THE HAIRCUT WAS A TESTThe major twist came from something absurdly ordinary.

A printer.
Beth remembered Patricia complaining that her home printer kept saving duplicate files to a cloud folder. With Patricia’s written consent later obtained through her lawyer during the school dispute, relevant documents were preserved and reviewed.
Among them was an earlier version of the caregiver form.
The metadata showed it had been created six weeks before Henry’s haircut.
Six weeks.
Before the school questions.
Before the salon appointment.
Before Patricia supposedly “lost patience” with his curls.
The draft included a note Patricia had typed to herself:
Need proof institutions recognize me as caregiver before Rose’s next hospital stay. Start with Henry school pickup.
I read it three times.
David read it once.
Then walked out of Rachel’s conference room because he couldn’t breathe.
The clues finally locked together.
Patricia repeatedly asking how school pickups worked.
Her obsession with becoming “official backup.”
The copied insurance cards.
Her questions about handling Henry’s school matters.
The fake authorization.
The planned salon appointment.
The folder at Sunday dinner.
The checklist mentioning “family witnesses.”
The next hospital admission.
The haircut had not merely been an act of control.
It had been a test.
Could Patricia walk into Henry’s school with paperwork we never approved and have herself treated as his authorized caregiver?
Yes.
Could she then take him to another business and convince strangers that she had parental authority?
Yes.
If both institutions accepted her story, she intended to use that history during Rose’s next hospitalization to push harder for a formal caregiving role over both children.
Not because David and I were incapacitated.
Because she believed our household needed correcting.
Rachel was careful.
“She could not simply take legal custody because she collected paperwork. That’s not how custody works.”
I understood.
This was not some magical secret guardianship.
It was worse in a more human way.
Patricia was building a narrative.
I’m already the one schools recognize.
I’m already managing appointments.
The parents are overwhelmed.
The sick child consumes their attention.
Henry needs structure.
She was trying to turn repeated boundary violations into evidence of normality.
David returned to the room.
His face was pale.
“She wasn’t trying to help.”
“No,” Rachel said.
“She was trying to make herself necessary.”
David looked at the haircut photograph.
“No.”
May you like
His voice hardened.
“She was trying to make our permission optional.”
