Chapter 8 - WE STOPPED PROTECTING THE BENNETT NAME

Dad withdrew Mark and Denise from daily financial control pending the audit.

Mark threatened to sue.

Dad did not change his mind.

Then we took the step none of us could undo.

With employment counsel, we notified current staff that tip distributions were under review and that any shortages would be repaid.

We also contacted the appropriate tax professionals to begin correcting withholding problems.

It was humiliating.

Employees asked questions Dad could not answer yet.

One cook walked out.

A server who had worked for us eleven years cried in the office because she had been behind on rent while money she earned was being diverted.

Dad apologized to every employee individually.

Mark called it “suicide.”

“You’re going to kill Mom’s restaurant,” he told me.

“No,” I answered. “We’re finding out whether there’s anything honest enough left to save.”

Emma made her own irreversible choice.

She submitted a written statement about the tip envelopes, the public accusation, and what she had observed in Dad’s office.

She also requested that Denise post a correction to the theft accusation.

Denise refused.

“Not while lawyers are involved.”

Emma read the message and nodded.

“Okay.”

She stopped crying about her aunt after that.

Not because it stopped hurting.

Because she stopped waiting for Denise to repair it.

Meanwhile, Mark reacted to losing account access with panic.

He called Susan five times.

Demanded copies of the audit.

Tried to reach the bank.

Then he said something to Dad that Susan documented in an email:

“You have no idea what happens if they see the purchase agreement.”

None of us knew what purchase agreement he meant.
