Chapter 6 - MY FATHER HAD BEEN AFRAID OF HIS OWN SON

I told Dad what Denise admitted.

He did not look surprised.

That hurt me.

“How long have you suspected Mark?”

Dad stared through my kitchen window.

“Since Christmas.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I didn’t know how much.”

“You knew enough to make a binder.”

He looked older than seventy-one then.

“Your brother was already ashamed of me after the stroke.”

“Ashamed?”

“He hated customers seeing me use the cane. Said it made the restaurant look fragile.”

The words landed slowly.

Mark had spent years talking about protecting the Bennett name.

Apparently that protection now included hiding his own father.

Dad admitted he began checking deposits after overhearing two servers complain about missing tips.

When he confronted Mark privately, Mark told him he was misreading reports.

Then missing invoices appeared.

Then North Shore Linen.

Dad started collecting copies in the blue binder.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

He gave me a tired smile.

“Because every time Mark and I fought, you disappeared.”

There was my mistake again.

Not causing Mark’s choices.

But abandoning the field because conflict exhausted me.

Emma came downstairs halfway through the conversation.

Dad looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She sat beside him.

“For what?”

“I let them make you the brave one.”

Emma took his hand.

That changed something in Dad.

The next morning he signed authorization for a complete independent review of restaurant finances going back three years.

Mark responded by filing a petition through an attorney questioning Dad’s capacity to make major business decisions after his stroke.

The fight was no longer only about money.

My brother was now trying to prove our father could not be trusted to say what he owned.
