Chapter 10 - MARK WASN’T TRYING TO SAVE THE RESTAURANT
The major twist came from an ordinary technology audit.
The disputed email had been sent from Dad’s account.
But the login originated from the restaurant office computer.
On the same afternoon Dad lay in a hospital room across town.
Mark admitted accessing Dad’s email.
Then the forensic accountant found three earlier messages drafted the same way.
One authorized preliminary discussions with the buyer.
One approved sharing financial records.
One suggested Dad intended Mark to “carry Bennett’s forward.”
Suddenly at least three earlier clues changed meaning.
Mark calling Dad confused was not merely cruelty after the stroke.
He needed people to believe Dad’s memory could not be trusted when the fake authorizations surfaced.
Removing the blue binder was not simply about hiding stolen money.
Dad’s notes established that he was cognitively capable of tracking detailed finances during the same period Mark claimed he was declining.
And publicly branding Emma a thief was not only about silencing a teenage witness.
Emma had repeatedly seen Dad working accurately in the office. She could contradict the narrative that Grandpa was too confused to manage anything.
The sale was the center.
Mark was not stealing because he desperately wanted to save Bennett’s Grill.
He was hollowing it out while inflating its performance so he could sell a business he did not own, secure an executive payout, and then let a corporate buyer inherit the liabilities after closing.
The gambling debt had made him desperate.
The acquisition opportunity made him calculating.
Denise had believed she was helping her husband survive a crisis.
In reality, she had been helping him manufacture one final profitable exit.
Dad listened to Susan explain everything without speaking.
Finally he said, “He wanted me alive enough to sign things and confused enough not to remember them.”
