Chapter 5 - DENISE TOLD ME HALF THE TRUTH

Denise came to my house alone.

No makeup.

No handbag worth more than my first car.

She looked exhausted.

“I need you to listen before you call Susan.”

“You have five minutes.”

Emma stayed upstairs.

Denise sat at my kitchen table.

“North Shore is Kevin’s account.”

“We know.”

She closed her eyes.

“Mark asked him to create the company.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because Mark needed somewhere to route money temporarily.”

“That’s theft.”

“It was supposed to go back.”

Every family crime apparently begins life as something temporary.

Denise explained that the restaurant had struggled after Dad’s stroke. Labor costs rose. A kitchen renovation went over budget. Then Mark made several sports bets.

Small at first.

Then not small.

He borrowed money to cover losses.

More bets followed.

“How much?” I asked.

Denise whispered, “Over a hundred thousand.”

I stared at her.

“You knew.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Not at first.”

“But eventually.”

She nodded.

“I started moving money because I thought I could keep payroll safe while he fixed it.”

“By stealing employee tips?”

“I was borrowing against them.”

“Those are wages.”

She flinched.

Good.

“Why Emma?”

Denise stared at the table.

“Because she found the difference between the POS reports and the tip envelopes.”

There it was.

The hidden truth.

Emma had not been blamed because money happened to disappear while she worked.

She had been blamed because she noticed the mechanism.

“Did Mark tell you to accuse her publicly?”

Denise began crying.

“He said if everyone believed Emma was stealing, anything she told Susan would look like retaliation.”

My chest tightened.

“You humiliated a seventeen-year-old girl to protect your husband.”

Denise looked up.

May you like

“I was trying to keep my marriage and this restaurant alive.”

“And how is that working?”
