Chapter 6 - Daniel Tries to Make Me the Problem

The next morning, Daniel’s strategy became obvious.

If he couldn’t deny the affair and the assault, he would recast me as unstable.

His attorney filed an emergency response accusing me of overreach motivated by “emotional distress arising from marital discord.” Two gossip blogs that had never shown the slightest interest in logistics companies suddenly published anonymous items describing me as “erratic,” “medicated,” and “prone to extreme reactions.”

The source was obvious.

So was the cruelty.

My mother had died three years earlier after a long illness. I had taken anxiety medication for six months afterward, and Daniel had apparently stored that fact away like a blade.

Claire moved faster than he did.

She filed for divorce that afternoon, sought a protective order based on the assault and intimidation, and attached sworn statements from the security officers, the receptionist, and Mark Bennett. Isaac, meanwhile, put the board on notice that any smear campaign against a controlling trust beneficiary during an active fiduciary investigation could deepen Daniel’s exposure.

“He’s making it worse,” Mark said when we spoke again.

“Good,” I replied.

What surprised me was how personal the board’s reaction became.

Carter Freight had started as my father’s company, but many of the senior people had known me since I was in braces and still called trailers “big silver boxes.” They had watched me step back after my father died because Daniel said he could carry the operational burden.

Now they were realizing exactly how convenient that had been.

“If he used her credentials,” one board member said during the special committee call, “this is not bad judgment. This is fraud.”

Another added, “And if he allowed that woman to assault Emily at headquarters, we’ve got employment, liability, and governance issues at the same time.”

The special committee then asked for something I hadn’t expected:

they wanted me in the room for the next review.

For years, Daniel had framed my absence as preference.

Suddenly, my presence was a necessity.

That shift should have felt triumphant.

Instead, it made me angrier.

Because the company had not only let Daniel become the face of power.

It had helped him do it by accepting the fiction that I wanted less than what was mine.
