Chapter 5 - The Assault Was Personal, the Fraud Was Not

Once HR had security statements, the police report was almost embarrassingly straightforward.
Vanessa assaulted me in a company restroom using scissors pulled from a desk organizer. There were witnesses to the aftermath, visible injury, and enough hair left behind to insult a coroner.
Her lawyer tried to call it mutual confrontation.
The problem with that argument was my silence.
I had not touched her.
I had not threatened her.
I had walked out.
That made her behavior look exactly like what it was: unstable, criminal, and impossible to explain away as office tension.
Meanwhile, the money question got worse.
Mark met Isaac and me that evening in a borrowed conference room at a hotel because he didn’t trust the company building anymore.
He brought printed ledgers, vendor summaries, and a spreadsheet he had made himself after Daniel’s explanations stopped making sense.
“These consulting payments,” Mark said, tapping a line item, “go to V.B. Strategy LLC.”
“Vanessa?” I asked.
He nodded.
Over ten months, the company had paid Vanessa’s shell entity more than $640,000 for “executive alignment services.”
That money had not gone through standard procurement review.
“Daniel approved every one,” Mark said. “And there’s more.”
He then showed us short-term bridge debt Daniel had taken on without full board disclosure and personal guarantees tied to a private investment vehicle called NorthPoint Transit Holdings.
“What is NorthPoint?” I asked.
Mark frowned.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. They’re the buyer on the Phoenix hub package.”
Isaac looked up sharply.
“The same buyer Daniel’s been pushing?”
“Yes.”
I sat back slowly.
So the mistress wasn’t just a mistress.
She had been getting paid through the company.
And Daniel wasn’t just cheating.
He was in a hurry.
Urgency in business is like blood in water. It tells you something is already wounded.
May you like
By midnight, the board’s special committee had hired outside forensic accountants. Daniel had been told to preserve devices and records. Vanessa had been placed on administrative leave pending termination.
And somewhere inside all of that paperwork, I felt the shape of a larger lie beginning to rise.
