Chapter 1 - The Mirror, the Phone, and the Five-Minute Warning

When I looked in the mirror and saw what Vanessa Brooks had done to my hair, I didn’t scream.
I stood very still in the executive restroom of Carter Freight & Logistics, one hand braced against the marble sink, and stared at the jagged pale patch she had carved into the left side of my head. Blonde strands clung to the wet counter like dead ribbon.
Vanessa stood behind me in the doorway, chest rising and falling, her black dress still perfectly fitted, her mouth curved in that vicious little smile she wore when she thought she had already won.
“Look at you,” she said. “He was never yours.”
Daniel came in a second later with two security officers behind him. He looked shocked for exactly one beat. Then, instead of coming to me, he turned to her.
“What were you thinking?”
Vanessa lifted one shoulder.
“I did it for us.”
That was when something in me became very quiet.
I walked past all of them without another word, got into my car in the parking garage, and called my husband.
“You have five minutes,” I said when he answered. “Bring Vanessa to my attorney’s office, make her apologize on the record for assaulting me, or your entire world ends today.”
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
“Emily, don’t be dramatic.”
“Five minutes.”
Then I hung up.
At that exact moment, a message from my attorney appeared on my phone.
The emergency injunction has been approved. We’re ready whenever you are.
Daniel thought my call was about humiliation, jealousy, and a mistress with scissors.
He had no idea it was really about signatures, trust shares, and a sale he was never supposed to survive.
And the five minutes I gave him?
May you like
That was not a threat.
It was mercy.
