Chapter 4 - Noon in the Boardroom

Daniel did not come to Claire’s office within five minutes.

He came within forty-two.

By then, the special board meeting he thought would approve the Phoenix sale had already begun upstairs at headquarters, and a process server had placed the injunction directly into the hands of the board chair.

Daniel stormed into Claire’s conference room without knocking.

Vanessa was not with him.

“What the hell is this?” he demanded, holding the court order like it was contaminated.

Claire didn’t rise from her chair.

“A restraining order, an asset freeze, and the beginning of a very unpleasant day for your client,” she said to the lawyer behind him. “Assuming you’re still comfortable representing him after what happened on company premises.”

Daniel looked at me, finally really looked at me, and I watched the moment he understood something fundamental had shifted.

I was no longer waiting for an explanation.

“You forged my authorization,” I said.

“I did no such thing.”

“Then someone in your office used my digital credentials to attach my consent to a sale package I never approved.”

He started to speak, then stopped.

That hesitation mattered more than denial.

Claire’s corporate partner, Isaac Moreno, entered then with a hard-copy packet and handed it to Daniel’s attorney.

“Your board has suspended the asset vote pending independent review,” Isaac said. “The chair has also convened a special committee.”

Daniel went pale.

“On what grounds?”

“Potential breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent authorization, and reputational harm following a physical assault by your executive assistant on the company’s majority trust beneficiary.”

He laughed once, disbelieving.

“This is a marital spat.”

That was when Claire turned her laptop around and played the restroom security clip.

The camera outside the executive restroom had no audio, but it showed enough.

Me entering.

Vanessa following.

Security arriving after shouting.

And me coming out with half my hair hacked away while Daniel rushed past me toward Vanessa.

His lawyer closed his eyes for a moment.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “is there anything else I need to know?”

Daniel didn’t answer him.

He stared at me instead.

“You set this up.”

“No,” I said. “You and Vanessa did. I just stopped pretending not to see it.”

He left the office twenty minutes later, not because he wanted to, but because he had to get back to a boardroom suddenly full of people asking the right questions.

And by the time he reached headquarters, Vanessa Brooks had already been escorted out of the building.
