Chapter 7 - WHAT MARK TOLD EVERYONE ABOUT MEWhile I recovered at Sofia’s apartment, I learned Mark had been building a story about me long before the backyard.
Neighbors told detectives he described me as emotional.
Coworkers remembered him joking that pregnancy made me “irrational.”
His mother had told two relatives that I was thinking of leaving because I was “having some sort of breakdown.”
That word again.
Breakdown.
The same word Mark used for Rachel.
Then Tessa, my coworker, brought over screenshots.
Months earlier, Mark had messaged her after I mentioned staying at her place during one argument.
Please don’t encourage Elena’s paranoia. Pregnancy has made her unstable.
Tessa had replied:
She isn’t paranoid. She’s scared of you.
Mark blocked her.
I had never known.
Another neighbor, Mr. Bennett, told detectives Mark once apologized in advance if anyone heard “Elena screaming during one of her episodes.”
That conversation happened three weeks before the backyard confinement.
Three weeks.
He was preparing witnesses before he needed them.
Prosecutor Grant explained why that mattered.
If police had arrived after someone else called—without my recordings, without the live dispatch, without the phone capturing their own words—Mark had already built an alternate explanation.
My wife is unstable.
She does strange things.
She agreed to this.
She exaggerates when upset.
The hidden phone had not just recorded abuse.
It had interrupted a narrative already under construction.
That evening I listened to one more audio file.
Mark was beside me.
Diane was on the porch.
He said:
“By the time you leave here, nobody’s going to believe whatever story you tell.”
Then Diane answered:
“They didn’t believe Rachel either.”
My whole body went cold.
I stopped playback.
That was not yet the major revelation.
But it was close enough that I understood what Detective Kim had been building toward.
