Chapter 6 - MARA ASKS FOR A DEALMara lasted nine days.
Then her attorney called the prosecutor.
She wanted to cooperate.
At first, I hated her more for that.
Cooperation sounded too clean for someone who had sat in a lawn chair while insects crawled across my face.
But prosecutor Amelia Grant explained the reality.
“Mara’s cooperation does not erase what she did. It may help establish what Mark and Diane planned.”
So I listened.
Mara admitted the backyard punishment had been discussed before it happened.
Not in precise mechanical detail.
But the purpose was clear.
Diane called it “breaking the cycle.”
Mark said if I spent enough time completely dependent on them, I would understand what leaving would mean.
Mara told herself it would last only an hour.
Then two.
Then overnight.
Every time she considered stopping it, Diane said:
“Don’t ruin the lesson.”
“And you stayed?” the prosecutor asked her.
“Yes.”
“You laughed?”
Mara cried at that point.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer was almost worse than silence.
“Because if I looked uncomfortable, Mom would turn on me too.”
That explained something.
It excused nothing.
Mara also confirmed the reference to Rachel.
She remembered that marriage.
She remembered screaming.
She remembered her mother telling everyone Rachel was unstable.
And she remembered an incident involving what Diane called “grounding her properly.”
Mara had been young.
Not young enough to be innocent.
But young enough to learn the family rule that mattered most:
Cruelty was acceptable if everyone agreed to rename it discipline.
The prosecutor asked why she cooperated now.
Mara answered:
“Because I heard Elena asking whether the baby was moving, and I still sat there.”
That sentence eventually reached me.
I did not forgive her.
But I believed she understood at least one true thing.
There are moments when doing nothing becomes an action.
