Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE BECAME A CRIME SCENEThe sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant the next morning.

I learned the details later.

The backyard was processed first.

Investigators photographed the disturbed ground, porch area, discarded food, water pitchers, and objects related to my restraint and confinement. They collected soil samples only where needed and documented the layout without turning the yard into the spectacle Mark later claimed it became.

Inside the house, they found my purse locked in Mark’s desk.

My car keys were inside his bedroom drawer.

My laptop was beneath a pile of clothing in Diane’s guest room.

My identification documents had been moved into a small fireproof box I did not own.

That mattered.

Because Mark’s attorney would later argue that I could have left whenever I wanted.

People who are free to leave usually have access to their shoes, keys, identification, and phone.

I had none of them.

Then investigators opened Mark’s office computer.

That changed the investigation again.

Three days before my confinement, Mark had searched:

Can spouse take unborn child out of state

emergency custody before birth

how to prove wife unstable pregnancy

None of those searches was criminal by itself.

Together with everything else, they became context.

There was also an email to his mother.

Subject:

Elena problem

The body contained only two sentences:

She’s threatening to leave again. We need to get this under control before she talks to anyone.

Diane replied:

Then stop negotiating.

Detective Kim showed me the printout in the hospital.

I stared at those words for a long time.

They had discussed me like a malfunction.

Not a wife.

Not a pregnant woman.

A problem to get under control.

The prosecutor authorized preliminary charges against Mark for unlawful imprisonment, domestic abuse-related assault, reckless endangerment, and other offenses pending full review.

Diane and Mara were also investigated for participation and failure to intervene, with prosecutors evaluating conspiracy and aiding-and-abetting theories based on what the recordings proved each had actually done.

No instant life sentence.

No dramatic judge banging a gavel the next morning.

Real cases take time.

But Mark was no longer in my house.

None of them were.

The court entered a temporary protective order prohibiting all contact with me.

When my sister Sofia arrived from Milwaukee, she cried the moment she saw me.

Then she got angry.

“I told you I didn’t like him.”

“I know.”

“No. I mean—I should’ve pushed harder.”

I reached for her hand.

“This isn’t yours to carry.”

Then I realized how strange that sounded.

For months, everyone around Mark had taught me to carry things that belonged to other people.

His temper.

Diane’s expectations.

Mara’s silence.

Now, for the first time, I was learning to put weight back where it belonged.
