Chapter 12 - MARK FINALLY SPOKE TO MEMark asked through attorneys to speak to me as part of a possible plea negotiation.

My lawyer, Danielle Brooks, initially opposed it.
So did Sofia.
I surprised both of them.
“I want to hear him.”
The conversation happened through a secured video conference with attorneys present. I was not alone. Mark could not contact me afterward.
When his face appeared on the screen, I expected rage.
Instead, he looked exhausted.
“Elena.”
I said nothing.
He swallowed.
“My attorney says there may be a resolution.”
“That isn’t why I’m here.”
He looked down.
For several seconds he seemed unable to decide what version of himself to use.
Then he said:
“My mother did things differently.”
There it was.
Not I did this.
My mother.
I waited.
“She believed shame corrected behavior.”
“You buried your pregnant wife.”
“I know.”
“You left me there.”
“I know.”
“You listened while I asked whether our baby was moving.”
His eyes closed.
When they reopened, they were wet.
“I know.”
I hated that part of me responded to his tears.
Not with forgiveness.
With grief.
I had loved him.
The body remembers love even after the mind learns better.
“Why?” I asked.
Mark breathed out slowly.
“Because you said you were leaving. Because I thought if you left, I’d lose everything. The baby. The house. Everyone would think I failed again.”
Again.
Rachel.
His first marriage had become not a warning, but a wound to his pride.
“So you decided to make me afraid to leave.”
“Yes.”
Finally.
One honest word.
Then he said, “I never wanted the baby hurt.”
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to bury a pregnant woman and then decide which consequences you intended.”
His face collapsed.
That was the emotional confrontation I needed.
Not because he apologized.
Because he finally stopped pretending intent was separate from risk.
When the call ended, I cried for nearly an hour.
Then I slept better than I had since the rescue.

Some conversations do not reconcile people.
They simply remove the last lie standing between them.
