Chapter 9 - THE MAN MY MOTHER FEARED WAS DEAD ALREADY

Samuel Cross had represented Daniel Bennett.
My father.
He knew Rose as Elena.
He also knew why she never returned.
According to Cross, Daniel and Elena reached Boston safely after Sofia helped them escape.
For almost a year, they lived quietly under the Bennett name.
Then someone found them.
Not Antonio.
Adrian's father.
Vincent Vale.
Sofia's husband.
Adrian went completely still when Rebecca later arranged a meeting.
Vincent had died nine years earlier.
I remembered newspaper photographs of his funeral.
Cross explained carefully.
Vincent was never charged with threatening Elena.
Cross had no evidence he ordered violence.
What he did have was a sworn statement Daniel prepared years later.
Vincent confronted them in 1995.
He said Elena's disappearance had humiliated the family.
He wanted her to return long enough to make a public appearance, reassure certain associates, and then she could supposedly leave again.
Elena refused.
Vincent told Daniel:
People who embarrass the Vales eventually become examples.
They moved again.
Changed apartments.
Cut contact with Sofia.
Rose Bennett became permanent.
Adrian looked physically ill.
“My father knew where she was?”
“At least once,” Cross said.
“Did my mother know?”
“I don't know.”
That was the question now.
Had Sofia secretly protected Elena?
Or had she unknowingly exposed her?
Then Cross gave us one final document.
A letter Rose wrote but instructed him never to deliver unless Sofia's husband died and Rose died before they could reconcile.
Both conditions had occurred.
Cross admitted he should have attempted delivery after Rose's death but lost track of Sofia's counsel during his own retirement transition.
Human failure.
Not conspiracy.
The envelope was addressed:
Sofia.
I did not open it.
It wasn't mine.
Adrian carried it to his mother.
Sofia read it privately.
Then asked to see us.
She looked devastated.
“She blamed me.”
“For what?”
“For Vincent finding her.”
Sofia's voice shook.
Rose believed the Starling Foundation grants had allowed Vincent to locate the studio.
Sofia insisted she'd funded nothing until years later.
The dates supported her.
So how had Vincent found Rose?
No one knew.
Yet.
Then Adrian said:
“My father handled private investigations for my grandfather.”
A small detail.
But it reframed everything.
Vincent had access to the Vale family's investigators, drivers, accountants, and contacts.
Rose may never have been hidden from him at all.
Sofia stared at her son.
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the letter.
“Mom, what if Aunt Elena wasn't hiding from Grandfather after 1995?”
Sofia went pale.

He finished:
“What if she was hiding from Dad?”
