Chapter 10 - MY MOTHER DIDN’T RUN FROM THE VALES — SHE RAN FROM ADRIAN’S FATHER

The major twist arrived inside Rose's undelivered letter.
Sofia allowed Rebecca to read it aloud.
Not the whole thing.
The part that changed the family history.
Rose wrote that she had eventually learned who found them in 1995.
Vincent.
But he had not been acting for Antonio.
He was acting for himself.
Before Elena disappeared, she had accidentally learned that Vincent was siphoning money from family companies through vendors controlled by associates.
She told Sofia.
Sofia confronted Vincent privately.
He denied it.
Days later, Daniel was beaten.
Elena assumed Antonio had ordered it because of the forbidden relationship.
That assumption protected Vincent perfectly.
Then she disappeared.
Afterward, Vincent told everyone Antonio was furious and searching for her.
But according to Rose's letter, Antonio eventually sent a message through an old dance teacher:
Come home alone if you ever need protection.
Rose never trusted it.
Years later, she learned Antonio had never ordered Daniel's assault.
Vincent had.
At least, that was what Daniel came to believe after a former Vale employee contacted him.
There was no conviction.
No courtroom proof.
But Rose had enough corroborating information to understand the danger.
Vincent needed Elena gone because she knew about his financial misconduct.
Her forbidden romance gave him a perfect motive everyone else would believe.
That reinterpreted every clue.
Sofia's guilt.
Rose refusing money long after Antonio died.
Her threat to disappear again in 2014 even though her father was already dead.
The secrecy around the Starling grants.
The way Sofia reacted not simply with joy but terror when the song played.
And Adrian's ignorance.
Sofia had hidden her role in Elena's escape because she believed she had started the chain of events.
But the deeper betrayal lived inside her own marriage.
Adrian's father had spent decades beside her while knowing exactly why her sister never came home.
Adrian stood near the window.
“My father was the person she feared.”
Sofia whispered:
“Yes.”
He turned.
“And you never knew.”
“No.”
That answer broke something in both of them.
Then came the hardest part.
Rose's letter said she had kept one item.
A ledger page Daniel received from the former Vale employee.
Not enough to prosecute Vincent by itself.
Enough to show suspicious payments through companies he controlled.
Rose wrote:
I kept it because if Emma ever gets pulled into that family, I want her to know leaving was not weakness.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Do you have anything like that?”
My mother’s cedar box had contained a photograph album with one page glued shut.
We had assumed water damage.
It wasn't.
Inside the backing was a folded photocopy.
Vendor names.
Dates.
Payments.
Vincent Vale's initials.
Adrian did not try to take it.
“Your lawyer keeps it.”
I looked at him.
“You believe her?”
He looked toward Sofia.
“I believe my family taught women to disappear rather than expect protection.”

That was the moment the Vale reunion stopped being about discovering I belonged to them.
It became about understanding why my mother had spent her life making sure I didn't.
