Chapter 6 - ADRIAN CANCELED THE WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT

Celeste did not handle the DNA result well.
She didn't know the exact findings because neither side released them.
But enough people noticed Sofia visiting my lawyer's office that speculation became certainty.
Celeste went on offense.
She told friends I had manipulated a child into performing a “family stunt.”
One gossip site quoted an unnamed source describing me as “a caterer with a very convenient story.”
Then someone leaked my mother's old legal name.
Elena Vale.
That changed everything.
Reporters stopped asking if I might be family.
They started asking what I planned to inherit.
Lucy heard the word rich at school.
A boy asked whether her “mafia cousins” killed people.
She came home crying.
That was the first consequence that made me consider walking away from the entire truth.
Then Adrian called.
“I've ended my engagement.”
I said nothing.
“Not because of you.”
“Good.”
“Because I watched Celeste humiliate a six-year-old, then spend ten days trying to destroy her mother for surviving the humiliation.”
That was cleaner than revenge.
“What did she say?”
“That she was protecting my family.”
“From a waitress?”
“From embarrassment.”
I understood the disease.
Status.
Appearance.
Control.
Different house.
Same language my mother seemed to have run from.
Then Adrian told me Celeste's father, Charles Winthrop, had business interests connected to two Vale-owned redevelopment projects.
Breaking the engagement would complicate those relationships.
“So you're losing money?”
“Possibly.”
“Because of what she did to Lucy?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Because I kept ignoring what she did to other people until she did it in front of someone I couldn't rationalize away.”
That made me respect him more than if he had claimed heroic outrage.
He had ignored things too.
So had I in other parts of my life.
We were all less clean than the headlines wanted.
Then Sofia called separately.
She wanted me to come to her home in Brookline.
I refused.
“Why?”
“Because every truth you've given me has had another door behind it.”
She was silent.
“What haven't you told Adrian?”
Another silence.
Finally:
“There are things about Elena's disappearance that belong to me.”
“Then stop making me dig for them.”
“I can't tell you over the phone.”
I almost hung up.
Then she added:
“Bring your mother's star.”
I looked at the necklace.
“Why?”
“Because there's something engraved inside it that you can't see unless it's opened.”
May you like
I had worn that necklace for eight years.
I never knew it opened.
