Chapter 7 - THE SECOND HALF OF THE STAR

Rebecca came with me to Sofia's house.

No security procession.

No dark men in hallways.

A quiet brownstone with framed family photographs and too many books.

Sofia placed her matching star on the table.

A jeweler she'd trusted for decades arrived and showed us how the edge separated.

Inside Sofia's:

S + E.

Inside mine:

NORTH STATION.

A date.

October 14, 1994.

I stared at Sofia.

“What happened there?”

She sat down.

Adrian stood behind her.

He clearly didn't know either.

Sofia began slowly.

Antonio Vale had arranged for Elena to marry the son of another powerful Boston family.

Not a formal forced marriage in the legal sense.

Something more ordinary and, in its way, more difficult to prosecute.

Pressure.

Threats.

Money.

Family expectations.

Elena was nineteen.

She was in love with someone else.

A musician named Daniel Bennett.

My father.

That stunned me almost as much as Elena's name had.

Dad died when I was nine.

Mom always told me they met in Boston after she moved there.

Another altered timeline.

Daniel had played violin in small orchestras and hotel ensembles.

Antonio considered him unsuitable.

Then Daniel was badly beaten outside a club.

He survived.

No one was convicted.

Elena believed her father ordered it.

Sofia believed it too.

“Did he?”

I asked.

“I don't know.”

At last, an honest limit.

After the assault, Elena agreed to leave Daniel.

Instead, Sofia helped them escape.

She bought two bus tickets under false names.

Gave Elena cash.

And placed the star around her neck.

North Station.

October 14.

Their escape point.

Adrian stared at his mother.

“You helped her disappear?”

“Yes.”

“You spent my whole life saying no one knew what happened.”

“I was protecting her.”

“From Grandfather? He died fourteen years ago.”

Sofia looked down.

There was the same gap again.

A truth that should have changed after Antonio died but did not.

I saw Rebecca notice too.

“Why didn't you search for Elena after Antonio's death?”

Sofia’s face went pale.

“Because she told me not to.”

“Twenty-seven years earlier.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

Sofia's hands began shaking.

Then she said:

“There was another reason.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“I believed if Elena ever came back, someone inside this family would kill her.”

The room went silent.

Not an enemy.

Inside the family.

That was the second layer.

And suddenly the Vale name felt less like an inheritance and more like a crime scene with better furniture.
