Chapter 8 - The Syringe in My Bathroom

Police executed a search warrant after the hospital toxicology report, Lily’s videos, and the device evidence supported a criminal investigation.

Detectives searched our house.

They found the adult nighttime medicine in Evelyn’s room.

They found deleted medication schedules on Julian’s tablet.

Then they found a dosing syringe inside my bathroom vanity.

At first, that seemed normal.

We kept infant syringes everywhere.

This one wasn’t normal.

Residue testing matched the purple nighttime medication.

My fingerprints were on the outside.

Of course they were.

It was originally Toby’s antibiotic syringe.

Someone had reused it.

Detective Harris, who had taken over the criminal medication case, explained why that mattered.

“If Toby became unresponsive and emergency responders found this in your bathroom, who would it point toward?”

“Me.”

“And if Julian and Evelyn both said you were confused about medication?”

My stomach dropped.

“Me.”

Then Harris showed me another item.

A printed medication schedule found in Julian’s desk.

My name appeared at the bottom:

Rachel administers evening dose.

I had never seen it.

The plan was starting to look brutally simple.

Withhold the actual treatment.

Sedate Toby with inappropriate medication.

Make his infection worse.

Create months of fake records showing I was medication-confused.

Place contaminated dosing equipment among my things.

Then when Toby deteriorated badly enough, call for help.

Not before.

After.

The medical record would show a sick infant.

The house would contain the wrong medicine in my syringe.

The portal would contain my supposed admissions.

The diary would show fear and confusion.

Julian and Evelyn would both say they had warned people about me.

And Lily?

They assumed a seven-year-old wouldn’t be believed over two adults.

They never imagined she would hide the real prescription inside a teddy bear.

Or record them.
