Chapter 11 - Evelyn Turns on Her Son

Evelyn lasted eleven days after the custody hearing before asking for a prosecutor.

Until then, she and Julian had shared a defense.

Mistake.

Confusion.

Family disagreement.

Different parenting styles.

Then digital evidence made the words useless.

Evelyn’s lawyer understood that Julian had more to lose and had already started positioning his mother as the sole person who physically administered the medication.

So Evelyn did what people like Evelyn often do when loyalty becomes expensive.

She told the truth selectively.

Julian designed the plan.

Julian created the fake diary.

Julian sent the medical messages through my account.

Julian coached Evelyn on what to tell doctors.

She admitted pouring the prescribed antibiotic down the sink.

She admitted giving Toby the nighttime medication.

She admitted allowing him to remain untreated even as the fever climbed.

“Why?” the prosecutor asked.

Evelyn cried.

Not dramatically.

She looked old.

“I thought Rachel was destroying my son’s future.”

That answer made me angrier than hatred would have.

My refusal to move.

My refusal to let her control my baby.

My refusal to be agreeable.

Those had become destruction in Evelyn’s mind.

“And the child?” the prosecutor asked. “What about Toby?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Julian said he wouldn’t be permanently harmed.”

There it was.

The sentence people use after deliberately risking somebody else’s life.

He’ll be fine.

Children had been reduced to acceptable collateral in an adult power struggle.

Evelyn agreed to cooperate in exchange for prosecutors considering reduced charges.

She did not walk away clean.

Nor should she have.

But her cooperation gave investigators the final passwords they needed to unlock Julian’s encrypted backup.

Inside were draft custody affidavits prepared before Toby ever became sick.

One paragraph described the hospitalization in past tense even though the file had been created two days before we went to Dr. Vance.

Rachel’s medication confusion resulted in Toby requiring emergency hospital treatment.

They had written the outcome before they caused it.

Julian wasn’t predicting a crisis.

He was scripting one.
