Chapter 12 - I Asked Julian One Question

I saw Julian once before the criminal case resolved.
Through lawyers.
In a conference room.
Mara sat beside me. His criminal attorney sat beside him.
He looked thinner.
His wedding ring was gone.
Mine had been off since Toby entered the hospital.
Julian started with the usual language.
“I never wanted Toby seriously hurt.”
I stared at him.
“You wanted him sick enough to hospitalize.”
“That’s different.”
The room went silent.
Even his lawyer closed his eyes.
Julian realized what he had said and tried again.
“Rachel, I was desperate.”
“For Dallas?”
“For our future.”
“You mean your future.”
He leaned forward.
“You were making every decision. Where we lived. What Mom could do. How I parented. Whether I took the biggest opportunity of my career.”
I almost didn’t recognize the marriage he was describing.
Then I did.
In Julian’s mind, every boundary I had ever set had been an act of domination because he believed partnership meant I eventually surrendered.
I asked the one question I had carried since the pediatrician’s office.
“When Lily told you she saw what you were doing, why didn’t you stop?”
His face changed.
Because that question removed every excuse.
He couldn’t say he didn’t understand the risk.
He couldn’t say he trusted his mother.
He couldn’t say he believed the medication harmless.
His own daughter had watched him.
She had been frightened.
And he continued.
Finally, he said:
“I thought she’d forget.”
I stood up.
That was the last answer I needed.
Children do not forget everything.
They especially do not forget the moment they realize one parent is willing to hurt somebody they love.

I walked out.
I never again spoke to Julian without communication going through lawyers or a court-approved parenting platform.
