Chapter 5 - Lily’s Teddy Bear Had One More Secret

Toby stayed in the hospital for four days.

The infection responded once he finally received the correct antibiotic. His kidney ultrasound was reassuring. His fever came down. His appetite returned.

The medical part of the crisis began improving.

The family part became worse.

On our third evening, Lily asked if she could sleep beside me.

I pulled her into the reclining chair.

She brought her teddy bear.

Halfway through the night, she whispered, “Mom?”

“What?”

“Am I in trouble for taking Grandma’s medicine?”

“No.”

“Dad said stealing makes people bad.”

“You weren’t stealing.”

“I took it out of the trash.”

“You protected Toby.”

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she unbuttoned one overall strap on the bear.

“There’s another thing.”

Inside the small stitched pocket was an old smartphone.

My old phone.

I hadn’t seen it in months.

“Where did you get this?”

“Dad gave it to me for games. But Grandma took it away because I recorded Toby crying.”

My stomach tightened.

“Recorded?”

Lily nodded.

“I wanted to show you he cried different when you were asleep.”

The battery was dead.

Hospital security found a charger.

When it powered on, there were three short videos.

The first showed Toby crying in his bassinet at 1:12 a.m.

Evelyn entered frame carrying the purple bottle.

The second showed Julian taking Toby from the bassinet.

The audio was faint but understandable.

Evelyn said, “She’ll wake up.”

Julian answered:

“Give it to him before she does.”

The third video changed everything.

It was recorded accidentally from beneath Lily’s blanket. Most of the screen was dark.

But the voices were clear.

Evelyn:

“How much longer do we have to do this?”

Julian:

“Until there’s enough history.”

Then Evelyn asked:

“And if he gets really sick?”

A pause.

Julian replied:

“Then that helps.”

I listened again.

Then a third time.

Mara did not.

She stopped after once.

“What history?” I whispered.

She looked toward Lily.

May you like

Then toward Toby.

“The history he thinks he needs to use against you.”
