Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF TELLING THE TRUTH GOT HIGHER

Once the trust was filed and the police report expanded, the conflict spread in directions I had expected and one I hadn’t.
Kyle’s restaurant staff learned something was wrong when a vendor complained about unpaid invoices and Harbor Point calls started going unanswered. Jessica began telling relatives Jane had always promised Dylan “something substantial” and was now letting me control her out of spite.
A few family members believed her.
Then Dylan produced the one thing that almost made the whole mess uglier for us.
An old text from Jane, sent after Emma was born:
One day that little girl may grow up spending every summer in Grandma’s beach house.
He used it in a message to Marcy arguing that Jane had long intended the property to become “part of Dylan’s family future.”
It wasn’t legally strong, but it was emotionally messy.
Jane read it and cried harder than she had in days.
“I meant Emma should have memories there,” she said. “Not that he could transfer it behind my back.”
The detective agreed the text did not excuse coercion or attempted fraudulent transfer.
But it did show how family language can become the mud people throw when real facts start hurting them.
Meanwhile, the county rezoning meeting drew closer. Marcy confirmed that the public packet listed surrounding parcels and that several LLCs tied to a coastal developer had already secured quiet options nearby.
If Jane’s house remained outside their control, the project could still happen.
It would just be more expensive and less clean.
That complication mattered because it meant Dylan’s scheme had involved actual outside parties, not just fantasy spreadsheets at Kyle’s kitchen table.
Then the title company turned over one more item in response to Marcy’s notice.
A scanned authorization form had been uploaded to the preliminary file.
The signature on it looked like Jane’s.
May you like
It wasn’t.
But seeing my wife’s forged name under a statement consenting to title work changed the case from pressure into something much harder to explain away.
