Chapter 10 - THE RESTAURANT WAS THE BAIT
The major twist arrived when the coastal developer’s attorney, trying to distance his clients from the family mess, produced correspondence showing what Harbor Point had actually represented.
Dylan and Kyle had told them that Jane’s beach house was “family-controlled” and would be available for contribution to a larger assemblage upon internal transfer.
They never described it as collateral for a restaurant.
They described it as the crucial frontage piece in a boutique redevelopment expected to sell for nearly $2.8 million once zoning shifted.
Suddenly every earlier clue snapped into place.
The county transfer forms instead of simple loan papers.
The rushed notary packet.
The appraisal scheduled while I was out of town.
Dylan’s panic about next Thursday’s public hearing.
The laughter in the kitchen after Jane fell—not the laughter of desperate people hoping for help, but of people who believed the deal was already basically theirs.
Even Kyle’s failing restaurant made new sense. It had been the most sympathetic story available, the one most likely to make Jane feel guilty enough to help.
The restaurant was real.
The danger to it was real.
But it was never the true objective.
Dylan wasn’t trying to save his in-laws from collapse.
He was trying to get control of a property before everyone learned how much more it was worth than he had admitted.
And his share of the projected proceeds would have solved problems far beyond family charity.
Jane sat across from Marcy while we absorbed it.
“He used the house where my mother taught him to fish,” she said quietly, “as bait.”
There was no good way to answer that.
The twist did not simply reveal greed.
It reclassified weeks of emotional pressure as a calculated timing strategy.
By the end of the meeting, the detective had one immediate question for us:
did we want to cooperate if prosecutors pursued attempted fraud and assault-related charges?
