Chapter 6 - THE FIRST PERSON TO LEAVE DYLAN WAS HIS WIFE

The truth changed every room in our lives.

Jane stopped calling it “the beach house” and started calling it “my mother’s house” again, which told me where her grief had gone. Dylan hadn’t just targeted real estate. He had targeted the one place where Jane still felt closest to her mother.

I handled the practical side because that was easier.

Marcy contacted the title company, the county register, and the attorney listed in the preliminary Harbor Point file. Megan turned over additional emails and a slide deck Dylan had built for Kyle and Jessica.

Harbor Point wasn’t pitched as a rescue for a restaurant.

It was pitched as a family-controlled hospitality venture with Dylan as development lead.

Jane was listed in one slide as anticipated contributing owner.

She had never seen it.

Megan moved out two days later and took their daughter, Emma, to her sister’s house in Huntersville.

“I’m not helping him explain this to our kid,” she told us.

That shift mattered more than I expected.

Up until then, Dylan could still tell himself he had merely pushed too hard for a smart opportunity. Megan leaving forced the uglier truth into his own house.

The setback came from Jane.

Thursday night, she sat at the kitchen table with one of Emma’s drawings in her lap and said, “If we go all the way with this, Dylan loses more than money.”

“He should have thought of that before Friday.”

“He’s still our son.”

That was the cost of knowing.

I was ready to fight cleanly and all the way through.

Jane still had to pass through the part where a mother tries to calculate whether truth will leave anything alive on the other side.

Before bed, Marcy emailed us another document Megan had found on Dylan’s laptop.

It was a spreadsheet of projected distribution percentages after a future sale.

Dylan’s share was larger than Kyle’s.
