Chapter 4 - THE PLAN STARTED BEFORE I LEFT TOWN

Monday morning cost us the first piece of ordinary family life.

Jane and I filed a formal report supplementing the initial police response. Marcy recommended we document attempted coercion and suspected property fraud, not because anyone promised criminal charges, but because people telling the truth early are usually better off than people trying to repair family appearances later.

Dylan reacted exactly as I expected.

He called me a traitor.

He accused Jane of exaggerating.

He texted his mother that Megan was “falling apart” and that we were destroying their marriage over “one bad afternoon.”

Then he showed up at our house and stood at the curb because I had told him not to step onto the property.

“Dad, please,” he shouted. “Just hear me out.”

I stayed on the porch.

“Talk.”

“It wasn’t a scam. We were trying to create a structure. There were tax reasons.”

“For whose benefit?”

“Everybody’s.”

“That answer is why you’re staying at the curb.”

He looked wrecked, but not remorseful.

Meanwhile, Marcy pulled more records. Harbor Point Holdings was co-managed by Kyle Mercer and Dylan Mercer—Dylan had started using Megan’s last name professionally in some filings after joining her parents’ restaurant group two years earlier.

There was also a draft operating agreement showing projected capital contributions.

One line item stood out:

Coastal Asset Contribution — 1.2M estimated.

Jane looked at it and went still.

The beach house was the only coastal asset anyone in this family had.

Then Marcy found the detail that proved the opening incident was not isolated.

An appraisal had been scheduled for the property while I was in Atlanta at the conference.

No one had asked Jane.

No one had asked me.

But someone had been confident enough to book it anyway.

Dylan hadn’t come over Friday hoping to persuade his mother in one last desperate burst.

He came over expecting the transfer to happen.
