Chapter 7 - WHAT CHLOE SPENT, JULIAN PROMISED

Financial records told us what fear had already suggested.

Chloe and Julian were underwater.

Julian’s consulting business had lost two major contracts.

Chloe’s boutique home-staging company was delinquent on payroll taxes.

Their mortgage was two months behind.

Three credit cards were near limit.

One lender had initiated collection.

The stolen investment money did not sit quietly.

It went to:

mortgage arrears,

business debts,

Chloe’s tax problem,

two luxury retailer purchases,

a leased SUV payoff,

and a $75,000 transfer into Blue Alder Holdings.

That last transfer mattered most.

It was seed money.

Not retirement.

Not caregiving reimbursement.

It looked like preparation for a second transaction.

We found that second transaction in Julian’s emails after a search warrant authorized review of his devices.

He had been in contact with a Pinewater acquisitions executive for weeks.

One message from Julian read:

Need title cleaned and family noise contained. Delivery window by month-end.

Another from Chloe said:

Once Elena’s gone back to work, we can finish with the will and placement papers.

Placement papers.

That phrase sent ice through me.

Those papers turned out to be brochures and draft admission forms for a locked memory-care facility two counties away.

They were preparing not just to steal from my mother, but to remove her entirely.
