Chapter 14 - THE ONLY THING MY BROTHER WANTED TO SAVE

Plea discussions began after the judge denied Julian’s motion to suppress the evidence from his devices.

He finally requested a meeting with my mother.

She refused.

Then she changed her mind—but only if it occurred at the prosecutor’s office with counsel present.

He looked smaller in that room than he ever had in the house.

Not sorry.

Smaller.

“Mom,” he began, “I was trying to protect the family.”

She stared at him for a long time.

“No,” she said. “You were trying to protect your debts.”

He swallowed.

“I needed time.”

“So you tied me to a bed.”

Chloe cried before he did.

That irritated him visibly.

Then he said the truest thing he had said in months:

“Once the Pinewater money came through, I thought I could fix everything.”

My mother’s hands stayed still in her lap.

“You cannot fix terror afterward,” she said.

He had no answer to that.

Chloe eventually agreed to cooperate more fully in exchange for a lesser recommendation. Julian held out longer, then accepted a plea when it became clear the cabin deed, option agreement, and physical abuse evidence would bury him at trial.

Neither outcome felt victorious.

It felt necessary.
