Chapter 2 - The Meat Atlas Wouldn’t TouchThree mornings later, I found the metal bowl beside Atlas’s kennel.

Raw beef.

Fresh.

Expensive.

Atlas was twenty feet away staring at it.

He would not approach.

That alone bothered me.

Atlas would steal turkey off the kitchen counter if you turned your back for half a second.

I crouched beside the bowl.

There was a faint chemical odor beneath the meat.

I stopped.

My veterinary training was incomplete, but not useless. I had worked two years in an emergency animal clinic before my mother died and I left school to support my younger brother.

I knew enough not to touch the food casually.

I photographed the bowl.

Then I called the estate’s veterinarian.

Dr. Monica Hayes arrived forty minutes later, collected the meat and residue properly, and told me to keep Atlas away from it.

Adrian joined us near the kennel.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know yet,” Monica said. “But Claire was right not to feed it.”

Graham arrived during that sentence.

“Feed what?”

Atlas backed away immediately.

Again, Graham stood toward his left.

Again, Atlas’s body changed.

I watched Graham instead of the dog.

He knew exactly where Atlas couldn’t hear him.

A person who understands an animal’s weakness can use it kindly.

Or strategically.

Graham noticed me looking.

“Something wrong, Claire?”

“No.”

His eyes stayed on mine half a second too long.

That evening Dr. Hayes called.

The meat contained a toxic chemical that could cause serious organ damage or death.

She did not speculate about who put it there.

Neither did I.

Adrian did.

“Who has kennel access?”

His security chief produced the list.

Six people.

Me.

Adrian.

Two groundskeepers.

The veterinarian.

Graham.

“Cameras?” Adrian asked.

One camera faced the kennel entrance.

It had gone offline between 11:42 p.m. and 12:16 a.m.

System maintenance, according to the log.

Authorized remotely by an administrator-level account.

Graham said calmly:

“That account is shared by senior staff.”

Adrian looked at him.

“So you could access it?”

“So could four others.”

True.

Not proof.

But I began keeping notes.

Graham’s midnight visits.

Atlas refusing food after Graham appeared.

The chemical residue I had earlier found beneath Atlas’s chain collar and assumed came from cleaning supplies.

And the left side.

Always the left side.

Then I noticed something else.

At breakfast, Adrian asked Graham a question while standing to his left.

Graham didn’t respond.

Adrian repeated himself from the right.

Graham answered immediately.

Later, I watched more closely.

Graham Pike also had hearing loss on his left side.

When he turned, I saw a pale scar disappearing behind his left ear.

The same side as Atlas.

That could have meant absolutely nothing.

Until Graham caught me staring at it.

May you like

He touched the scar automatically.

And for the first time since I met him, the man with perfect manners looked frightened.
