Chapter 12 - Atlas Took the Bullet Graham Meant for AdrianThe shooting happened in a parking garage beneath the closing attorney’s office.

Not inside the mansion.

Not during some theatrical confrontation.

In a concrete garage where every sound echoed.

Federal agents had cleared Adrian’s arrival route.

But Graham knew the DeLuca security routines because he had helped design them.

He used an old maintenance access corridor connected to the adjacent building.

Adrian stepped from the armored SUV.

Atlas jumped down beside him.

I was not supposed to be there.

I wasn’t.

I learned what happened later from video and eyewitnesses.

Graham appeared between two parked vehicles approximately thirty yards away.

He called:

“Adrian.”

Adrian turned.

Atlas turned first.

Graham raised the gun.

One shot.

Atlas launched himself forward at the exact moment Adrian’s security officer pulled Adrian sideways.

The bullet struck Atlas high in the shoulder.

The dog crashed onto the concrete.

Security returned fire but missed as Graham ducked behind a pillar.

Agents tackled him at the vehicle ramp less than ninety seconds later.

He had another loaded magazine.

Fake identification.

Cash.

And a copy of the waterfront sale documents.

Atlas was transported to an emergency veterinary hospital under police escort.

Adrian called me from the garage.

His voice sounded nothing like the man everyone lowered their voices around.

“Claire.”

“What happened?”

“Atlas.”

That one word emptied my lungs.

I met them at the veterinary hospital.

Dr. Hayes was already there.

The bullet had passed through soft tissue near the shoulder without striking his spine or major vessels.

Severe.

Painful.

But survivable.

I stood beside Atlas while they prepared him for surgery.

His eyes found mine.

“Not today,” I whispered. “You are not dying for another DeLuca.”

Adrian stood on the other side of the table.

There was blood on his cuff.

Atlas’s.

He touched the dog carefully from the right.

“I’m sorry.”

Atlas’s tail moved once.

Barely.

That tiny motion destroyed both of us.

The surgery lasted more than two hours.

Successful.

When Dr. Hayes came out and told us Atlas would probably walk normally again after rehabilitation, Adrian sat down in the hallway and covered his face.

No bodyguards.

No reputation.

No DeLuca mythology.

Just a man who had finally understood that the animal his family called dangerous had spent almost a decade protecting people from the man they trusted.

Graham Pike survived his arrest without serious injury.

I was glad.

Not because I forgave him.

Because dead men become legends.

Living defendants answer questions.
