Chapter 11 - Graham Disappeared Before the Warrant Was SignedInvestigators moved quickly after the recording.

Not quickly enough.
By the time a warrant was approved for Graham’s arrest on charges connected to witness intimidation, poisoning, conspiracy, and the historical homicide investigation, his house was empty.
His personal phone sat on the kitchen counter.
Car gone.
Passport gone.
Two suitcases gone.
Adrian wanted to send his own security team.
Federal agents told him not to.
For once, he listened without argument.
“Let them find him,” I said.
“He killed my sister.”
“I know.”
“He killed Murphy.”
I looked at Noah sleeping in the next room.
“I know.”
“He tried to poison Atlas.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
“And he was planning to kill me.”
“That’s exactly why you don’t go looking for him.”
The next forty-eight hours were miserable.
Every unfamiliar vehicle looked wrong.
Every noise near the estate gate tightened my chest.
Noah tried pretending he wasn’t scared.
Atlas stopped leaving my side.
Then Graham’s attorney contacted investigators.
His client wanted to surrender.
Conditions requested:
public location,
counsel present,
no DeLuca employees nearby.
The government agreed.
But Graham never appeared.
Instead, police found his abandoned car near BWI Airport.
Inside was a boarding pass purchased under another man’s name.
Decoy.
Federal agents believed Graham remained in Maryland.
Why?
Because one item was missing from his house.
A handgun.
The same caliber family as the weapon potentially connected to the warehouse shooting eight years earlier.
At 6:40 that evening, Adrian received an email from Graham.
You were always too sentimental to run what your father built. Elena knew it too. Sign tomorrow and all of this can still end quietly.
Sign.
The waterfront sale.
Closing had been accelerated.
Adrian’s board wanted the transaction completed before the historical investigation destabilized negotiations.
His lawyers advised holding it at a secure downtown office.
Federal protection arranged.
Adrian agreed.
Then Graham sent another message.
This one contained a photograph.
Me walking Atlas behind the mansion.
Taken less than an hour earlier.
Graham wasn’t near the airport.
He was watching the estate.
Agents moved us immediately.
Noah to a protected location.
Me with him.
Adrian to a separate secure site.
Atlas was supposed to remain with a trained handler.
He refused to enter the transport crate.
He fought until the handler stopped.
Adrian looked at me.
“What?”
“He knows something.”
Dogs do not predict assassinations.
I knew that.
But Atlas knew Graham.
His smell.
His movements.
His patterns.
Adrian finally said:
“Bring him.”

That decision almost killed Atlas.
It also saved Adrian’s life.
