Chapter 8 - Lily Had Been Practicing One Sentence for Months
The first sentence Lily signed to me was:
PLEASE DON’T LET HIM TAKE ME.
That was not spontaneous language.
Anna had practiced it with her.
Not because she expected kidnapping.
Because Deaf children are frequently forced to depend on hearing adults during emergencies, and Anna wanted Lily to have direct language for danger.
Their safety practice included:
I NEED POLICE.
THAT PERSON IS NOT SAFE.
DO NOT CALL MY FATHER.
And:
PLEASE DON’T LET HIM TAKE ME.
Anna worried she had frightened Lily by teaching too much.
After Walmart, she blamed herself for needing the lessons.
The child psychologist helping Lily said something Anna later repeated to me.
“Preparation did not create the danger. It gave Lily language inside it.”
That became one of the most important distinctions in the story.
The same applied to the Iron Howl patch.
Lily did not trust me because I was scary.
She trusted a symbol attached to people her mother had identified beforehand.
Still, there was one strange part.
Why did Lily react so violently when Evan called her Emma?
The forged paperwork explained the alias.
It did not explain the flinch.
Then Anna remembered a conversation from three months earlier.
Judith had been visiting during one of Matthew’s supervised parenting periods.
She brought an old photo album.
Inside was a picture of Matthew’s grandmother.
A little girl stood beside her.
Judith pointed.
“That was Emma.”
Lily asked who she was.
Judith signed clumsily:
FAMILY.
Anna thought nothing of it.
Later Judith joked:
“If I’d had another daughter, I always wanted to use Emma again.”
When police searched Judith’s laptop, they found an unsent draft form created months before Evan was hired.

Lily’s.

Lily’s.
The alias predated the abduction.
That made it more than operational convenience.
