Chapter 11 - Judith Called It Rescue

Judith requested an attorney-mediated conversation with Anna.
Anna agreed once.
No children present.
I was not there.
Anna told me about it later.
Judith began by crying.
“I thought Matthew was losing his children.”
Anna replied:
“He was losing control.”
“He’s their father.”
“Yes.”
“You were poisoning Lily against him.”
“How?”
“You taught her to tell people he wasn’t safe.”
“I taught her to identify unsafe behavior.”
Judith shook her head.
“You don’t understand what it does to a grandmother when someone takes your grandchildren away.”
Anna stared at her.
Then:
“So you hired someone to take them from me.”
Judith flinched.
“I thought Evan knew how to handle difficult situations.”
“He zip-tied my wrists.”
“I didn’t authorize that.”
“He drugged me.”
“I didn’t authorize that either.”
“You authorized taking me somewhere I had not agreed to go.”
Judith became quiet.
Anna leaned forward.
“You created a new school file for my daughter under another name.”
“We were preparing contingencies.”
“You wanted her to stop signing.”
“We wanted her to function in the world.”
“She functions.”
“She hides behind those hands.”
Anna later told me that sentence ended any possibility of reconciliation.
Not because Judith was angry.
Because she still did not understand Lily.
ASL was not the evidence of Lily’s weakness.
It was the reason a stranger in Walmart knew she was asking for help.
Anna told Judith:
“My daughter survived your plan using the language you wanted taken from her.”
Judith cried harder.
Anna did not comfort her.
Before leaving, Judith said:
“I love those children.”
Anna answered:
“I believe you.”
Judith looked relieved.
Then Anna continued:
May you like
“That’s why I need you to understand love did not make you safe.”
That sentence traveled through the family faster than anything a judge said.
