Chapter 12 - Matthew Wanted Credit for Not Knowing Everything
Matthew’s criminal exposure became more complicated than Evan’s.
He had not physically restrained Anna.
He had not personally transported anyone.
Evidence did not prove he knew every tactic Evan would use.
His defense focused on those distinctions.
Anna did not dispute them.
“You don’t get charged with the version of the crime I’m angriest about,” she said once. “You get charged with what evidence proves.”
I liked her for that.
Evidence did prove Matthew participated in planning an unauthorized removal.
Knew Anna would resist.
Expected her phone to be taken.
Expected separation.
Planned emergency custody filings once the children reached Missouri.
And knew the “Emma” identity existed.
He eventually faced criminal consequences connected to the conduct prosecutors could establish, while Evan faced more serious charges arising from the physical abduction and restraint.
Judith resolved her own charges and legal exposure separately.
Nothing happened overnight.
Motions.
Hearings.
Plea negotiations.
Family court.
Protective orders.
Evaluations.
Months.
Matthew once requested a direct conversation with Anna.
She agreed with attorneys present.
His first sentence:
“I never told him to hurt you.”
Anna nodded.
“I know.”
He looked surprised.
Then:
“I never wanted Lily scared.”
“I believe that too.”
More surprise.
“So you understand—”
“No.”
His face fell.
Anna continued:
“You keep asking for moral credit because the outcome was worse than the plan.”
Matthew looked away.
“You wanted strangers to take us across state lines.”
Silence.
“You wanted our daughter placed in a school I had never seen.”
Silence.
“You helped create another identity.”
“It was just a nickname.”
“She said no.”
Matthew’s jaw tightened.
Anna repeated:
“She said her name was Lily.”
For months, every adult in the case had argued about orders, jurisdictions, intentions, and parental rights.
Anna reduced it to a seven-year-old’s sentence.
