Chapter 7 - Matthew Said He Thought They Were Going to a Hotel
Matthew’s attorney built his defense around distance.
Judith hired Evan.
Judith handled logistics.
Matthew signed something but believed it concerned legal transport after Anna violated custody rules.
He did not know anyone would restrain her.
He did not know Evan would sedate her.
He did not know Lily would be given another name.
Some of that remained possible.
Then police obtained his messages.
Matthew to Judith:
WHERE WILL HE KEEP ANNA?
Judith:
SEPARATE FROM THE CHILDREN UNTIL SHE CALMS DOWN.
Matthew:
SHE’LL CALL POLICE.
Judith:
NOT IF THE PHONE IS GONE.
That did not look like a father expecting a routine hotel transfer.
Another:
Matthew:
ONCE THEY CROSS MISSOURI LINE I FILE FIRST THING.
Judith:
EXACTLY. PHYSICAL POSSESSION MATTERS.
The phrase was legally simplistic.
Family courts do not automatically reward whoever physically possesses children first.
But people do foolish things based on half-understood law.
Judith had spent years watching television courtroom dramas and reading custody forums.
She had convinced herself that if Matthew physically had the children in Missouri with his relatives while Anna appeared missing, unstable, or hospitalized, he could obtain emergency temporary orders before she reconstructed what happened.
It was not a brilliant plan.
It was a dangerous plan built by people who mistook paperwork for reality.
Matthew’s biggest problem was another message.
Sent the night before the abduction.
IF SHE MAKES A SCENE, EVAN KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE IT, RIGHT?
Judith:
THAT’S WHAT WE’RE PAYING FOR.
Matthew:
I JUST WANT MY KIDS BACK.
That sentence became his moral refuge.
He repeated it constantly.
I just wanted my kids back.
As if wanting something altered the methods used to obtain it.
At one hearing, Anna’s attorney later said:
“Children are not property recovered by possession.”
The judge corrected everyone.
The criminal case and custody case would remain separate.
Evidence would be tested.
Safety assessed.
No one would treat Walmart footage as an automatic permanent custody judgment.
That frustrated people online.
It reassured Anna.
