Chapter 8 - EMMA REFUSED TO LET THEM CALL IT A FAMILY DISPUTE
Emma spent two nights in the hospital.
When investigators interviewed her formally, she insisted Natalie be present and her mother stay away.
Joan accepted that.
It hurt.
It was also appropriate.
Emma remembered more gradually.
Mark entered through the hidden corridor.
Carol followed.
They demanded she sign a proposed modification allowing unsupervised parenting time while they “worked things out privately.”
Emma refused.
She told them she had footage proving Mark repeatedly entered the apartment in violation of the protection order.
Carol said the footage would only prove Emma was “obsessed with manufacturing danger.”
Then Emma drank from a glass of water already sitting on the counter.
Within minutes she became weak.
She remembered trying to reach Sophie’s room.
Mark stopped her.
The next clear memory was the back seat of a car.
“Did they tell you what they planned?” Detective Park asked.
“Not all of it.”
“What did you hear?”
Emma stared at her hands.
“Carol said I needed to understand what courts think of mothers who disappear.”
That statement supported kidnapping and conspiracy theories, but prosecutors still needed objective evidence tying each person to each act.
Emma did not ask them to skip that step.
She wanted a case that survived.
The day after discharge, the family court issued emergency orders suspending Mark’s contact with Sophie and prohibiting Carol from approaching either Emma or the child.
Mark was arrested on kidnapping, unlawful restraint, stalking, and related charges.
Carol was arrested on conspiracy and kidnapping-related counts.
Building manager Carl Dorsey was charged later for assisting unauthorized access and destroying maintenance records after the investigation began.
Then Emma made a costly decision.
She gave police permission to examine all footage from her apartment cameras.
Not just the final night.
Months of private domestic life.
Breakfasts.
Arguments with Joan.
Sophie dancing in pajamas.
Emma crying after court hearings.
The evidence would help establish Mark’s repeated intrusions.
It would also strip away much of the privacy she had fought so hard to preserve.
Natalie asked if she was sure.
Emma answered:
“I’m tired of protecting myself by hiding what they did.”
The footage produced proof.
It also produced the clue that made Part 10 inevitable.
On three separate nights, Mark entered the apartment without Carol.
