Chapter 6 - NATALIE CHOSE HER SISTER

Joan stopped defending Mark after she learned Carol owned part of the building.

She did not stop defending herself.

“I didn’t know.”

Natalie’s answer was immediate.

“You didn’t want to know.”

That was the relationship that broke next.

Joan admitted Carol had contacted her repeatedly during the divorce. They had lunch. They exchanged messages. Carol said Emma was “alienating” Sophie from Mark and that both grandmothers had a responsibility to keep the family together.

Joan believed her.

Sometimes because Carol was persuasive.

Sometimes because believing Emma meant admitting Joan had spent years minimizing things she did not want to understand.

Natalie asked for Joan’s phone.

Joan resisted.

Then surrendered it.

The messages changed everything again.

Three weeks before Emma disappeared, Carol wrote:

Mark only needs enough unsupervised time with Sophie for the evaluator to see they are bonded. Emma keeps sabotaging that.

Joan replied:

I agree Emma has become too rigid.

A week later:

If Emma won’t cooperate, maybe she needs to see what life looks like when people stop enabling her fear.

Joan had sent a heart reaction.

She started crying when Detective Park showed it to her.

“I thought she meant mediation.”

Natalie said nothing.

There was one more exchange.

The day before Emma vanished, Carol wrote:

Tomorrow should settle things. Please keep your phone on.

Joan never asked what tomorrow meant.

That silence had a cost.

Natalie gave police a second piece of information.

Emma had called her two days earlier and said:

“If anything happens, don’t let Mom explain it away.”

Joan closed her eyes.

It was the first time she seemed to understand that her daughter had stopped viewing her as a safe person before she disappeared.

By evening, Joan signed consent for a full extraction of her phone.

She could not undo the key.

She could not undo the messages.

She could do one thing now.

Stop protecting the wrong people.

The extracted data provided a location ping from Carol’s phone at 12:18 a.m.
