Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY SAID EMMA WAS OVERREACTING

By noon, Emma’s disappearance was already dividing her family.

Natalie arrived at the hospital furious.

Their mother, Joan Whitaker, arrived defensive.

“Mark would never hurt Emma,” Joan said before Detective Park had accused him of anything. “They’ve had a difficult divorce. That’s all.”

Natalie stared at her.

“You said the same thing when he tracked her phone.”

“He was worried about his daughter.”

“He hid an AirTag in her car.”

“He admitted that was wrong.”

Park let them argue just long enough to hear the family pattern.

Emma had spent eighteen months trying to create distance from Mark.

Joan spent eighteen months calling that distance cruelty.

Mark was charming, financially successful, and deeply invested in presenting himself as the reasonable parent. He owned a commercial flooring company, coached youth hockey, and donated generously to Sophie’s private kindergarten.

Emma, by contrast, had changed jobs twice after the separation, moved three times, and documented everything.

To Joan, that looked unstable.

To Natalie, it looked like survival.

Then Park asked Joan a direct question.

“Did you give Mark Emma’s current address?”

Joan hesitated.

Natalie turned toward her.

“Mom?”

“He already knew the neighborhood.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Joan’s eyes filled.

“He wanted to send Sophie a birthday gift.”

Natalie stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.

“You gave him her address?”

“He’s her father.”

“He had a protective order!”

Joan lowered her voice.

“I did not give him a key.”

Nobody had asked about a key.

Park caught it.

“So there was a key?”

Joan realized too late what she had done.

Emma had given her mother one emergency copy after moving in.

Three months earlier, Joan let Mark borrow it because he claimed Sophie had left a stuffed rabbit at his house and wanted to put it inside before Emma returned from work.

“He gave it back immediately,” Joan whispered.

Natalie covered her face.

Detective Park asked, “Did Emma know?”

“No.”

That was the first consequence of the night.

Emma had not simply been stalked by an ex-husband.

Someone she trusted had quietly reopened the door she had spent months trying to close.

And if Mark had copied that key, Joan might have given him more than an address.

She might have given him the first access point into whatever happened at 3:17 a.m.
