Chapter 2 - SOMEBODY HAD BEEN INSIDE THE WALLS

The maintenance corridor ran behind four apartments.

Building management claimed it had been sealed since a renovation twelve years earlier.

It had not.

The panel behind Emma’s bookshelf had fresh tool marks. A second concealed access point opened into a vacant unit two doors down. Someone had installed a battery-powered motion camera inside the passage, angled directly toward Emma’s living room whenever the panel was open.

Detective Lena Park arrived before sunrise.

She found Emma’s phone, the broken necklace, and several strands of hair caught on a protruding screw near the service stair. None of it proved what had happened, but it was enough to treat Emma as potentially abducted rather than voluntarily missing.

Sophie was taken to the hospital for a routine evaluation and then placed temporarily with Emma’s younger sister, Natalie.

Before leaving, Sophie told Sarah one more thing.

“The door man comes when Mommy is sleeping.”

Sarah went still.

“What door man?”

Sophie rubbed her eyes.

“Daddy said not to call him that.”

Daniel and Sarah exchanged a look.

“Your daddy comes through the door?”

Sophie nodded.

“Sometimes.”

Emma was divorced.

Her ex-husband’s name was Mark Carter.

According to the first database check, Mark lived in Winnetka and had no legal right to be inside Emma’s apartment.

There was more.

A civil protection order issued seven months earlier prohibited him from entering Emma’s residence without written agreement.

When Detective Park pulled the underlying family-court file, she found stalking allegations, repeated unwanted visits, and a temporary suspension of unsupervised parenting time after Mark allegedly entered Emma’s prior townhouse using a copied key.

Yet building manager Carl Dorsey insisted Mark had never been authorized inside the Evanston property.

“Do you know him?” Park asked.

“No.”

“Ever seen him here?”

“No.”

Then Sarah noticed a photograph pinned behind Carl’s desk.

A summer golf outing.

Carl stood beside six men.

One of them was Mark.

Sarah turned the frame toward him.

Carl’s face emptied.

“That was a charity tournament.”

“You said you didn’t know him.”

“I meant I don’t know him personally.”

Detective Park closed her notebook.

“Start again.”

The hidden corridor had not merely been discovered by Mark.

Someone inside the building had helped him use it.
