Chapter 9 - When the Hospital Became Part of the Fight

The conflict spread beyond police and family court the week Claire preregistered at Williamson Medical Center under a privacy alert. Hospital social work documented the domestic-violence case, Ethan’s witness statement, and the active protective orders so security would know not to allow Mark or Linda onto the maternity floor without permission.

Rebecca warned Claire this was normal procedure. Claire still hated that childbirth now required threat management.

Mark and Linda tried to turn the broader system in their favor. Through their attorney, they argued Claire’s request for hospital restrictions proved she intended to isolate the baby from his father and paternal relatives “during a period of potential maternal mental instability.” They attached nothing persuasive to back it up, but the filing created the kind of complication Rebecca had been expecting: it put Claire’s credibility under indirect pressure.

At the temporary hearing, the judge refused to order any evaluation or access changes without evidence, but he also noted he expected “all parties to refrain from inflammatory assumptions.” It wasn’t a loss. It wasn’t the clean validation Claire wanted either.

“Truth alone doesn’t settle things this early,” Rebecca told her afterward. “Evidence does.”

That evening April called. The first phone extraction was back. It contained enough to change the case, but she wanted to show Claire in person.

Claire met her the next morning at the sheriff’s office with Tasha beside her. April opened a folder and laid out printouts of text threads. There were messages between Linda and Mark from the day before the assault.

She packed already.

Tomorrow is too late.

Don’t let her disappear before we have something documented.

Claire’s throat went dry.

“Something documented,” she repeated.

April nodded. “There’s more.”

She turned one more page.

A message from Mark to Linda:

If Ethan hears her, keep him at the fence. I’ll calm her down before anyone gets the wrong idea.

Rebecca exhaled slowly. “That’s not just cover. That’s preparation.”

May you like

April tapped the stack once.

“And we haven’t even gotten to the worst part yet.”
