Ethan also remembered something he had overlooked. Three evenings before the yard incident, Linda stood at the back fence talking to Mark while Claire was at a prenatal yoga class. He heard Linda say, “You need something on paper before she goes.” He assumed it was a family argument about divorce. Now it sounded different.

Rebecca stitched the pieces together for Claire in a small conference room full of banker’s boxes.

“They’re constructing two stories at once,” she said. “The visible one is anger about you leaving. The more useful one is instability—your instability. Enough that a court, a hospital, or child-protective authorities might hesitate to trust you without question.”

Claire thought of Mark shifting from rage to honey the second Ethan lifted his phone. She thought of Linda’s highlighted printouts and legal questions. She thought of the locked gate that made escape impossible while still leaving the scene visible from the fence.

“They wanted a witness,” Claire said.

Rebecca nodded. “Possibly. A neighbor sees a pregnant woman tied up in a yard, and if they can control the story fast enough, it becomes evidence of a breakdown instead of an assault.”

Claire recognized the pattern then. Not random abuse. Not even just punishment.

A deliberate course of control built around ownership of the baby and fear of losing access.

“What do we do with it?” she asked.

“We get the actual communications,” Rebecca said. “And we widen the protective action.”

That afternoon Claire signed the paperwork authorizing Rebecca to amend the family-court filings and April to request a warrant for contents from Mark’s and Linda’s phones. It was the most deliberate choice Claire had made yet. It also made retreat impossible.

Mark reacted through counsel within twenty-four hours.

He filed an emergency request accusing Claire of “manipulating third parties” and asked the court to order an independent mental-health evaluation if she intended to limit his future access after the birth.

Rebecca read the filing twice, then looked up.

“He’s scared,” she said.
