Chapter 3 - The Story Mark Started Telling

By evening, Mark had already told his version to half the family. Claire learned that from a text her cousin Julia forwarded without comment:

Mark says Claire had a pregnancy breakdown and tied herself up outside after threatening to disappear. Linda tried to calm her down. Is that true?

Claire stared at the message until the words blurred.

She and Tasha were sitting in a furnished shelter apartment twenty minutes from the hospital, a place with generic framed prints, a small kitchen table, and a lock that clicked loudly enough to make Claire flinch every time it turned.

“Save it,” Tasha said. “Don’t answer.”

Claire did.

Ethan came by that night to give April the full video from his phone. The clip was short but decisive: Claire tied to the post, Mark moving toward the knots, Claire shouting not to let him untie her, and Mark insisting she was confused. Ethan also repeated that he had seen Linda at the side gate before the screaming started.

“Did she say anything?” April asked.

“Just that she was making sure the dog didn’t get out,” Ethan said. “But there wasn’t a dog in the yard.”

That inconsistency joined the others. The bag slashed open. The highlighted article. Mark’s instant switch to the word panic.

The first real consequence arrived the next morning when the family-court clerk called to confirm the temporary protective hearing date. If Claire wanted the order extended, she would need to testify. Mark would have the right to appear. Linda could appear too if Mark’s attorney brought her as a witness.

Claire had spent years smoothing over Mark’s volatility by shrinking around it. Hearing that she would have to face him in court made her body go cold.

Tasha watched her for a long moment. “You don’t have to decide everything today,” she said.

Claire looked down at the bruised rope marks circling her wrists.
