Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY I NEVER WANTED

I hated Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics.
Not the employees.
The family mythology around it.
My father talked about the company as though every warehouse beam had been welded from his own blood.
Charles handled sales.
Lucas handled operations.
They built it together for years.
Then came a recapitalization.
Charles: 32 percent.
Lucas: 34 percent.
Other shareholders: 34 percent.
My father never forgave the numbers.
He called Lucas manipulative.
Ambitious.
Disloyal.
He also never explained how Lucas acquired that much ownership.
I had assumed business happened.
Deals happened.
Adults signed papers.
Then Lucas died and those shares landed in a trust connected to me.
Suddenly everybody wanted me to understand.
I visited headquarters six weeks after Matthew’s birth.
An older dispatcher named Ron saw me in the lobby.
He removed his cap.
“Lucas talked about you constantly.”
I cried in the parking lot afterward.
That visit changed something.
The forty-eight-million-dollar offer was not a revenge prop.
Hundreds of people worked there.
Drivers.
Warehouse staff.
Dispatchers.
Managers.
Retirement accounts.
Health insurance.
Families.
Charles expected me to reject the sale because he wanted it.
That would still mean he controlled my decision.
So I hired independent advisers.
Financial.
Legal.
Operational.
Maybe selling was right.
Maybe not.
My choice needed to survive my father’s preference.
Charles could not accept that.
He called from another number.
“Courtney is involved with Nathan.”
I said nothing.
“She’s been using me.”
“You dragged your pregnant daughter out of her house because you wanted a forged signature.”
“I was protecting the company.”
“You were protecting control.”
“Lucas stole this company from me.”
“Then fight Lucas.”
“He’s dead.”
Silence.
“And you thought that made me easier.”
Charles began crying.
It moved me less than I expected.
“Help me stop Nathan.”
“No.”
“Victoria—”
“You don't become my ally because somebody betrayed you harder than you betrayed me.”
I ended the call.
Then Samantha showed me something from File 17.
The oldest ownership documents did not begin with Charles and Lucas.
The predecessor company had another name.
Baldwin Transport Group.
And another shareholder.
Eleanor Baldwin.
