Chapter 14 - FILE 17 CLOSED

A year after Lucas’s death, Samantha asked whether I wanted File 17 archived.

I sat in her office with Matthew asleep against my chest.

“Closed?”

“Legally, no. Organized.”

I smiled.

“That sounds more accurate.”

The major questions had answers.

Charles had attempted to use fraudulent authority.

The house had never been his.

Lucas’s trust safeguards had worked.

Courtney and Nathan had a side arrangement Charles did not know about.

Eleanor was alive.

My mother had held real company interests.

Charles’s ownership mythology was incomplete.

Lucas had been investigating those issues before his death.

And there remained no evidence that his highway crash was anything other than an accident.

That last fact mattered.

We referred anything suspicious appropriately.

Nothing supported turning grief into murder.

I finally let that possibility go.

Charles remained my father.

Biology did not vanish.

Neither did consequences.

I did not allow unsupervised contact with Matthew.

Charles complained.

Then, eventually, stopped.

Eleanor asked once whether I thought he could change.

“I don't know.”

That answer used to feel weak.

Now it felt disciplined.

Some questions should remain questions until behavior answers them.

Before leaving Samantha’s office, I asked:

“Was there anything in File 17 Lucas never explained?”

She hesitated.

“One thing.”

My stomach tightened.

Then she handed me an envelope.

My name.

Lucas’s handwriting.

IF THE BABY IS BORN BEFORE I CAN EXPLAIN EVERYTHING.

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Do you want to open it?”

I looked at Matthew.

Then at the envelope.

“Not today.”

For the first time, unread information did not feel like danger.

May you like

It belonged to me.

That made waiting different.
