Chapter 1 - THE DAY MY FATHER THREW ME OUT

Three weeks after my husband died, my father dragged me out of my own house by my hair.

I was eight months pregnant.

My name is Victoria Gallagher.

Lucas had been killed in a highway crash outside Syracuse twenty-three days earlier, and I was still sleeping with one of his T-shirts beneath my pillow because grief had reduced me to rituals.

That Tuesday morning, Charles Baldwin entered with an emergency key I had forgotten he still possessed.

His new wife, Courtney, followed.

Twenty-four years old.

Perfect hair.

Perfect nails.

A small smile that appeared whenever somebody else was uncomfortable.

Charles dropped a folder onto my kitchen table.

“Lucas is dead. You’re in no condition to manage anything.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“I’m selling the house before you destroy what’s left.”

“The house is mine too.”

“No. Lucas bought it.”

“He added me to the deed four years ago.”

Charles barely reacted.

That should have warned me.

“Get out.”

Courtney laughed.

“Victoria, don’t be dramatic.”

I stood carefully.

My son shifted inside me.

“Both of you. Leave.”

Charles grabbed my arm.

I pulled free.

His hand moved into my hair.

Then he dragged me across the kitchen floor.

I screamed once.

Not from fear.

Pain shot through my scalp and shoulder.

Courtney followed us toward the door laughing like she was watching some humiliating family prank.

At the threshold, Charles shoved me.

I landed hard on one knee.

Warm fluid rushed down my legs.

For one stunned second, nobody moved.

My water had broken.

Courtney looked down.

Then laughed again.

Charles threw my handbag onto the porch.

“Call whoever you want.”

I did.

911 first.

Then Samantha Vance, the attorney who handled Lucas’s estate planning.

“My father is inside my house. He attacked me. My water broke.”

I swallowed.

“And I think he’s trying to take the property.”

Samantha became silent.

Then:

“Victoria, your father called my office yesterday.”

My pulse slowed.

“What?”

“He said you authorized him to liquidate Lucas’s estate.”

“I never did.”

“I know.”

Inside the house, Charles’s phone rang.

I heard him answer.

“What do you mean blocked?”

Silence.

“No. I have authorization.”

Another pause.

“She signed it.”

Then Courtney screamed:

“Charles! The account is frozen!”

I sat on the porch waiting for the ambulance.

My father thought he had just thrown a helpless pregnant widow out of a house he could control.

He had no idea he had triggered the exact safeguards Lucas created for him.
