Chapter 9 - TRENT TRIED TO MAKE ME THE FRAUD

Trent’s counterattack came through a civil filing.

He alleged that Vale Holdings had been created with my knowledge as part of an informal family asset-protection plan.

He claimed Rachel had notarized my signature because I had signed the deed earlier and later denied it after “becoming emotionally dysregulated.”

He attached emails where I had called Rachel irresponsible.

Messages where I told her I would not fund another Trent venture.

A voicemail from two years earlier where I said, “If you keep letting him use your money, don’t come to me when it disappears.”

It made me sound hard.

Sometimes I had been.

But hardness was not consent.

Martin dismantled the story with dates.

On the day I supposedly signed the deed, I was photographed at the banking luncheon.

My phone location matched.

My credit-card receipt showed lunch in Durham.

Rachel’s own notary journal contained no legitimate entry recording my appearance.

Then Trent made a more dangerous claim.

He said Rachel had been acting under my instructions all along.

In other words, if the fraud collapsed, he intended to put my daughter between himself and the consequences.

Rachel’s attorney finally requested a proffer meeting with investigators.

That was when I knew their marriage was over in every way that mattered.

But before Rachel spoke, Martin received records from the brokerage account that had received $125,000 after her house sale.

I assumed it belonged to Rachel because it was in her name.

That part was true.

What she bought with the money was not.

The account purchased shares in one small public technology company.

An obscure logistics software company.

Trent had been promoting it privately for months.

And three days after Rachel bought the shares, Trent’s online followers began receiving posts suggesting a “major industry partnership” was about to be announced.

The price jumped.

Rachel sold.

Profit:

$81,000.

The timing was too precise.

Suddenly the forged house loan looked like only one part of something larger.
