Chapter 12 - MY DAUGHTER FINALLY TOLD ME WHY

Rachel and I met at Martin’s office because I would not meet her at home.

She looked different without Trent beside her.

Not younger.

Smaller.

She sat across from me and placed her hands flat on the table.

“I knew he was lying months before I sold the house.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I fixed the debt first, I could leave without looking stupid.”

I waited.

“Keep going.”

Her eyes filled.

“Every time something went wrong, I heard your voice saying you knew this would happen.”

That hurt.

I did not defend myself.

“So you stole my house instead?”

“I told myself it wasn’t stealing if I put it back.”

“People who steal from family say that a lot.”

She looked down.

“I thought I could make one smart move big enough to erase all the stupid ones.”

That was Rachel in one sentence.

Not greedy exactly.

Ashamed.

Desperate to turn failure into a temporary technical problem.

“Did you know Trent would hit me?”

“No.”

“Did you know he might threaten me?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

That answer cost her more than denial would have.

“And you brought him anyway.”

She nodded.

“I thought you would sign if we scared you enough to believe I was going to lose everything.”

My throat tightened.

“You were willing to make me afraid of losing you so I would give you my house.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

“Yes.”

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Finally she whispered, “I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

Her eyes lifted with hope.

I stopped it there.

May you like

“Believing you’re sorry is not the same thing as trusting you.”

That was the emotional truth neither of us could negotiate around.
