Chapter 7 - THE LOAN APPLICATION USED MORE THAN MY SIGNATURE

Meridian was not the last lender.
The proposed $900,000 loan against my home had gone much farther than Martin initially realized.
Vale Holdings submitted an application to Hanover Private Credit four days before Trent hit me.
The lender’s file contained:
my forged deed;
a copy of my driver’s license;
a falsified bank statement;
and a letter supposedly written by me explaining that I was transferring my home into my daughter’s LLC as part of “estate planning.”
My driver’s-license copy came from Rachel.
I knew exactly when.
The year before, she had borrowed it to book a family cruise after David’s death. She told me the cruise line needed identity documents for everyone.
I had sent her a scan.
She kept it.
The estate-planning letter copied phrases from emails I had written to Martin after David died.
Somebody with access to my personal correspondence had assembled a financial version of me convincing enough to pass preliminary underwriting.
Hanover’s credit officer had only one remaining requirement before funding:
independent verification with the property owner.
Me.
The scheduled call was Friday morning.
The morning after Trent and Rachel arrived at my house.
That explained why they came Thursday night with luggage.
They did not merely need somewhere to sleep.
They needed proximity.
If they could get me to cooperate—or make me unavailable while Rachel handled communication—the loan might close.
I remembered Trent saying, “We’ll stay a month.”
I remembered Rachel begging me not to embarrass them.
I remembered her grabbing my phone after Trent hit me.
Every small behavior acquired a second meaning.
Martin looked at the lender file and said, “Eleanor, the assault may not have started because you refused them housing.”
I already knew.
Trent’s anger had escalated when I demanded to see the investment account.

I had threatened the story before they could finish using it.
And Rachel knew exactly what Friday morning was supposed to accomplish.
