Chapter 7 - THE SECURITY CHIEF CHOSE THE WRONG MAN

The tall security chief from the gala was named Owen Pike.
He had shoved my shoulder when I tried to escort Mom out.
At the time, I assumed he was simply following Vanessa’s instructions.
He wasn’t.
Owen worked for an outside executive-protection contractor brought into NorthStar five years earlier.
The contract had been approved personally by Marcus.
Elaine interviewed him after reviewing the gala security footage.
Owen started defensive.
Then she showed him NorthStar’s actual ownership records.
According to Elaine, he stared at my name for almost thirty seconds.
“He didn’t know?” I asked.
“No.”
“That I founded the company?”
“No.”
“What did Marcus tell security about me?”
Elaine slid a report across the table.
Daniel Reed — no operational authority. Spouse of employee. Avoid privileged access. Escalate any attempt to enter executive-controlled spaces.
I read it twice.
Marcus had formally instructed company security to treat NorthStar’s founder like an outsider.
Years earlier.
Long before Vanessa turned my low profile into a joke.
That wasn’t merely protecting my anonymity.
It was controlling it.
Owen also turned over his gala instructions.
At 8:37 p.m., before Vanessa threw water on Mom, his supervisor received a message from the CEO security channel:
If Daniel Reed attempts to intervene in any disturbance tonight, contain him and remove him quietly.
The message originated from a system account tied to Marcus’s suite.
“Before the disturbance?” I asked.
Elaine nodded.
Thirty-two minutes before.
My stomach turned cold.
“How would he know there’d be a disturbance?”
“We don’t know.”
Yet.
Then Owen added something else.
At 6:15 that evening, Julian asked security to ensure the ballroom’s west exit remained unobstructed because “press might need a clean angle.”
Phones had later captured Mom’s humiliation from exactly that angle.
The viral clip was not random.
Somebody expected a scene.
Perhaps Vanessa had merely planned to insult Margaret.
Perhaps Julian encouraged it.
Whatever the intention, Marcus’s security office anticipated my reaction before anything happened.
That night I finally accepted what I had been resisting.
The fraud might not end with Julian.
May you like
The betrayal might not end with Vanessa.
And the man closest to the center had been beside me longer than either of them.
