Chapter 5 - VANESSA DISCOVERS WHO SHE MARRIED

Vanessa came to Margaret’s house the following afternoon.

She arrived in a black Mercedes she bought after telling me our household budget was “tight.”

Mom watched through the curtain.

“That your car?”

“Apparently not.”

Vanessa knocked.

I opened the door but did not invite her in.

Her eyes moved over my jeans, old shirt, and bare feet.

Even now, she looked at me like I had failed to dress appropriately for being betrayed.

“NorthStar froze my accounts.”

“NorthStar froze reimbursement access tied to the investigation.”

“Julian says you caused it.”

“Julian says a lot.”

Her jaw tightened.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Tell your friend Marcus to fix this.”

Interesting.

“You think Marcus works for me?”

She actually laughed.

“Daniel, enough. Whatever weird midlife crisis you’re having, stop pretending you have corporate authority.”

I stepped aside.

Elaine was sitting at Mom’s table.

In front of her lay NorthStar’s original charter.

Vanessa saw my signature.

Not a consultant signature.

Founder.

Her face changed.

She moved closer.

“What is that?”

“NorthStar Freight Systems incorporation agreement.”

“You signed it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I founded it.”

She stared at me.

Then laughed again.

This time it sounded frightened.

“No.”

I opened the shareholder ledger.

“Sixty-four percent is controlled through Reed Horizon Trust.”

She looked from the page to me.

“You’re lying.”

Elaine spoke.

“He isn’t.”

Vanessa sat without anyone inviting her.

For nearly a minute, she said nothing.

Then came the question that told me exactly who she was.

“Does that mean half becomes mine in the divorce?”

Mom closed her eyes.

I almost admired the consistency.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Pre-marital ownership transferred into an irrevocable trust years before we met.”

She went pale.

“But you let me think—”

“That I wasn’t rich?”

“Yes!”

The word exploded out of her.

She seemed to hear herself only afterward.

I looked at her.

“You made sure everyone thought I was unemployed.”

“You humiliated me!”

“My private finances humiliated you?”

“You let me build my entire career while people thought I had married down.”

Margaret stood.

She had been silent long enough.

“No, honey.”

Vanessa turned.

Mom’s voice remained soft.

“You built your career by telling people you had married down.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Then left.

Twenty minutes later, Julian received a call from her.

Corporate monitoring captured only metadata.

Not content.

But four minutes after that call, Hale Ridge Advisory attempted to close its operating account and transfer the balance overseas.

Someone knew we were getting closer.
